How To Dress Well – Ocean Floor For Everything
EDIT: forgot to add the sound cloud link (can’t get the widget to work. reeks of effort) so here’s the link to the sound cloud
Interesting drop from HTDW’s ’2012 gon be special’ album. Decidedly less lo-fi than most of his 2010 album Love Remains and I don’t really know what to think of it. I just want to start by saying that I love How To Dress Well, he’s the best artist to suffer a break-up with, the best artist to pine after that girl with, the best artist to just sit around and feel sensitive with.
Some people called the lo-fi element a shtick or a gimmick or whatever, but Love Remains was the most masterfully executed piece of lo-fi music i’ve ever heard and have yet to hear. Krell’s voice is still as brilliant as ever and now that it hasn’t been papered over with digital distortion we can truly hear the velvety gloss of this bespectacled skinny kid crooner. That bromance we’ve seen over Twitter between HTDW and Holy Other , his signing to UK label Tri Angle Records leads me to suspect that digital manipulation will play as much a part in this album as the last (I don’t know, but the beginning of the new track reminds me of Holy Other). I’m looking forward to seeing how the man who showed us how to dress well pulls it off. I bloody hope he does.
That said…
I’m all cried out from your last album Tom Krell. I don’t know if I can love again…

HOORAY! I’ve been listening to a slew of Japanese dream pop over the past months and it’s cool to see all the tracks from Jesse Ruins / Sapphire Slows / Hotel Mexico on this EP. The compilation was released in aid of the victims of the Tohoku earthquake that caused devastating damage to the Tohoku region just over a year ago. Though all three of these guys have been signed to Western labels (Captured Tracks, Not Not Fun, Double Denim) the work that has been done in the Japanese DIY scene as the CUZ ME PAIN collective has been incredible. Bedroom projects have always been particularly interesting for me, having first heard Atlas Sound and being blown away by the intimacy of, well, the bedroom. Which probably sounds really obvious now that I think about it but I’m not going to dwell on it.

Rimar – It’s Been So Long
Man, they’re starting to call this RnB revival that only hipsters seem to know about PBR&B. Well thanks to the modern marvel of make-it-yourself music stations (or software), anyone can recreate that most smooth of pops and paste it with liberal amounts of sounds that we could call ‘drugged out’ (like The Weeknd.) Rimar’s production’s not so pristine. In fact, one of the reasons that I really liked this track was it reminded me of those winter evenings tinkering with Fruity Loops. One of the samples kinda breaks the rhythm and at first I was like ‘this song is broken, i’m taking it back to the internet’. But then I started to dig it for that very reason.
